In a recent Parade magazine interview with Elton John, the singer states the following:
“I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems. On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don’t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East — you’re as good as dead.”
I was initially astounded more at my reaction than the article itself. I just thought that this makes sense, while incredibly sad. Often such statements would just send me reeling with righteous indignation, then the “ought to” part of my person would kick in and I’d pray for someone to share Christ with such a person. If you read the rest of the article, it makes sense that someone who has sought joy in the world (and the means to HAVE the world), still has any “God thoughts” at all, would twist and turn the truth of Scripture to fashion God in his / her own image.
Certainly, it is reviling to state that Christ was gay. Certainly, it is frustrating that such a magazine had printed the same article with Mohammed in place of Jesus, it probably wouldn’t have even seen the printed page. Jesus is fair game. At the same time, Jesus Christ, king of the universe and Creator of Elton John, does not need our defense. Jesus has no needs. But you know what we should do with such articles? You know what we need to do? The church of the Lord Jesus Christ should lose all semblance of joy in the world (like the Elton Johns of the world) and find such deeply satisfying joy in Him, that we are distinct and the gospel actually is clarified in our preaching, living, enjoying.
A prayer for Elton John…
“Oh Great God! You rule and reign above all. You have made all things for yourself. By your Spirit you’ve taught us in Romans 1 that those who embrace sinful lifestyles do so because in their sin they have suppressed Your truth, turned from seeing You to seeing things you’ve made. God, through any means, bring Elton John to an awareness that YOU ARE! That YOU ARE CREATOR and SAVIOR! The ONLY ONE! May he turn from groping after worldliness for joy, and find joy in YOU. The REAL YOU! May you bring the gospel message, the good news of YOU, to Elton John in such a way that you are more beautiful than all that he has in this world. Amen.”
